CHAPTER SIXTEEN

A month went by, and Elin still didn’t love Rob, but she didn’t mind being loved by him.

She was grateful to him for keeping his promise and accepting there couldn’t be anything physical between them until she was over Al. At night they slept opposite each other on the caravan benches, an arm’s length away. Sometimes he would reach out to her, and she would look at his outstretched, upturned palm, white in the darkness, and wait until it gave up its need for her touch and retreat back under the bedclothes.

Her body was healing, but her mind was troubled. Some nights she lay awake looking at the flowers on the curtains. Through the light from the caravan next door, she could see faces in the blooms and the buds. They were ugly, jeering, and even though she knew it was a trick of her imagination, when she shut her eyes and opened them again, the devils’ faces were still there, easy to find.
